Mughal-E-Azam is a bench mark of Indian Cinema that depicts a story of an era that was grand and royal. Like the era, the film too was a paradigm of extravagance and enormity. The film got released on 5th August 1960 and was premiered simultaneously in 150 theatres all over the country. Produced at a cost of Rs 1.5 crores then, it was the biggest money grosser in those times It took 500 working days to make The Magnum Opus of Indian Cinema.
The meticulous work that went into the making of the film is incredible. Tailors were brought from Delhi to stitch the costumes, Hyderabadi goldsmiths made the jewellery, Kolhapuri craftsmen did the the crowns, Rajasthani ironsmiths fabricated the shields, swords, spears, dagger and armour, specialists from Surat-Khambayat were employed for the exquisite zardosi embroidery on the costumes while the elaborate footwear was ordered from Agra! For one of the songs, ''Ae Mohabbat Zindabad'' there was a chorus of 100 singers used!! The passion of the director does not end here. There are several stories about the unique technique used in the making of the film to bring the reality onto the sets of Mughal-e-Azam.
K Asif, the director of the film was a perfectionist. He was a cinematic genius. The breathtaking battle scenes, the sumptuous splendour of the Mughal Court, some of the most seductive song and dance ensembles ever filmed, the confrontation scenes between Akbar and Salim - the best of Mughal-e-Azam has never been surpassed and is the finest testament to K Asif''s cinematic talents.
