Cyclone 'JAL' weakens into a deep depression

The cyclonic storm, 'JAL' moved westwards, weakened into a deep depression and lay centered at 2030 hrs IST of today, the 7th November 2010, over southwest Bay of Bengal near lat.13.00N and long. 80.50E, about 40 km east of Chennai and 180 km south-southeast of Nellore. It would move west-northwestwards, weaken further and cross north Tamil Nadu and south Andhra Pradesh coasts near to the north of Chennai within few hours.

Under its influence, rain/thundershower would occur at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places over north Tamil Nadu and Puducherry during next 12 hours and at most places with isolated heavy to very heavy falls over Rayalaseema and South Coastal Andhra Pradesh during the same period.

Rain/thundershowers at most places with heavy to very heavy falls at a few places would occur over South Interior and Coastal Karnataka during next 36 hours.

Squally winds speed reaching 50-60 kmph gusting to 70 kmph would prevail along and off North Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and south Andhra Pradesh coasts during next 12 hours and decrease gradually thereafter. Sea conditions will be very rough along and off these coasts during same period.

Storm surge of about 1 metre above the astronomical tide may inundate the low lying areas of Nellore & Prakasam districts of Andhra Pradesh and Tiruvallur and Chennai districts of Tamil Nadu at the time of landfall.

Damage expected:

Minor damage to loose and unsecured structures.

Action suggested:

Fishermen are advised not to venture into the sea.
